How much time do you spend looking at a digital screen each day? A large portion of the population works at a computer or uses a screen throughout the day, making computer eye strain an increasing problem. It is estimated that 90% of the people who work at computers are affected by Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).
If you spend a lot of time in front of the computer, then there are a few things that you can do to protect your eyes:
- Adjust the Distance/Height of the Screen: If the screen is too close or too far away, then you might be straining your eyes. Reposition so that the screen sits just lower than the level of your eyes, allowing your neck to rest naturally while you are viewing the screen.
- Take a Break: Even if you are at your desk for 8 hours each day, make it a point to take a break so that you can look away from the screen. Close your eyes and rest for 20 or 30 seconds. It is also important to look at objects that are far away to change the focus of the eyes.
- Blink More Frequently: One common problem with Computer Vision Syndrome is that the eyes dry out because blinking decreases. Try to blink more frequently throughout the day, and close your eyes for a few minutes if you feel like they need a chance to lubricate.
- Adjust the Lighting: Staring at a screen in a dimly lit room can be hard on your eyes. Adjust the brightness of the room and avoid any situation that might put a glare from the light or the sun directly on the computer screen.
- Visit an Eye Doctor: If you suspect that you might be suffering from CVS, then the best thing that you can do is talk to your eye doctor. Regular eye exams can be used to monitor the health of your eyes, helping you to make adjustments to your daily habits as needed.
