Water Sports and Eye Safety: Protect Your Vision

  • By:Dr. Katie Dugan

Whether you enjoy a day surfing at the beach or you like to swim laps for exercise in the pool, it is important that you protect your eyes when you are in the water. Summer is a season when people often spend more time outside in the water, but don’t let your guard down regarding eye safety.

Here are a few things to consider so that you can protect your vision:

Wear Goggles

The best way to keep things out of your eyes is to wear goggles when you are in the water. These protective glasses keep the water out and help you avoid contamination from chlorine, salt water, sand, dirt, and other compounds that might contact your eyes.

If you wear glasses or contacts, then you might consider investing in a pair of prescription sports goggles for swimming. These lenses will help you see clearly so that you can avoid an accident related to poor vision.

Disposable Contact Lenses

There is nothing worse than losing a contact lens! Not only will your vision be limited, but you could be in danger if you can’t see clearly in the water. There are times when the water might wash out your contact. Or, you could be facing the risk of an eye infection if microorganisms get caught in the lens.

The best solution is to wear one-time-use contact lenses while you are in the water. If you lose a lens, then you can have a spare so that you can see for the rest of the day. Plus, you can dispose of the lenses after you are done swimming to reduce the risk of an eye infection.
